Statement of Need
Our understanding of cancer initiation, progression, and response to treatment has significantly advanced in the past decade. This understanding, coupled with technical achievements in radiation, bioinformatics, and genome/proteome analysis, has expanded oncologists' diagnostic abilities and treatment options. These rapid advances also underscore the need to integrate the latest clinical findings into widespread practice. Targeted therapeutics, which rely on the molecular characteristics of disease, offer hope for improving patient outcomes on a more individual basis. Current molecular targets range from cell-surface receptors, such as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); mediators of intracellular signaling, such as Raf kinase, mammalian target of rapamycin, and heat-shock proteins; and regulators of cellular processes, such as the cell cycle and cellular motility, to antiapoptotic factors and angiogenic agents. In addition, several novel therapeutic approaches are being studied, including the use of epigenetic agents to reactivate silenced genes, as well as the use of antisense molecules to silence inappropriately active genes. These treatment advances can be used in single-agent regimens or incorporated into combination therapies. The Seventh Annual Recent Advances and New Directions in Cancer Therapy Conference, in Partnership With the California Cancer Consortium, will provide participants with updates on cutting-edge therapeutic strategies for a variety of tumor types, including lung, breast, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary cancers.

Target Audience

This program is intended for medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, community practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, advanced practitioners, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care professionals interested in the care and treatment of patients with cancer.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of current and novel targeted agents in the treatment of patients with cancer based on the results of recent clinical trials.
2. Describe clinical trial data supporting the safety and efficacy of combining targeted agents with other treatment modalities in the treatment of patients with cancer.
3. Evaluate the safety and efficacy of therapeutic agents that target angiogenesis in cancer.
4. Compare the safety and efficacy of agents that target components of cellular signal transduction pathways in the treatment of patients with cancer.
5. Analyze the predictive and prognostic value of molecular and clinical biomarkers for the management of patients with cancer.
6. Describe advances in epigenetic approaches for the treatment of patients with cancer.
7. Describe the rationale for and assess recent developments in targeting cancer stem cells.
8. Discuss the impact of genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics on drug development and in personalizing treatment approaches for patients with cancer.

Method of Participation
Lectures, visual aids, presentations, and panel/round table discussions will be utilized to engage attendees and enhance the learning process. All attendees will receive a comprehensive CD-ROM of the program presentations approximately 4-6 weeks after the conference.
