Approximately 32,820 new cases of ovarian and cervical cancers will be diagnosed in the United States during 2009. The 5-year survival rate for women with localized ovarian cancer is 92%, but only one-fifth of all cases are diagnosed at this early stage. Unfortunately, the survival rate drops to 30% for patients diagnosed with distant disease. The gold standard of care for patients who have undergone cytoreductive surgery is doublet chemotherapy with a taxane and a platinum agent. However, despite the high response rates achieved with initial platinum-based treatment, more than 60% of women experience relapse or are refractory to therapy. For those women who relapse within 6 months of platinum-based therapy, few effective, subsequent options exist. Alternative therapies and optimization of available treatments are needed to improve the management of this disease.

The implementation of screening programs that enable early detection of cervical cancer has reduced mortality by more than 50% in developed countries. As a result, the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States is significantly lower than the incidence worldwide. In developing countries where screening programs are not in place, cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer death among women. More than 99% of all cases of cervical cancer can be associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Therefore, vaccination against HPV has the potential to prevent a vast majority of cervical cancer cases worldwide. For those cases that do occur despite preventative measures, more effective therapies are needed.

This program will provide participants with the most recent data from clinical trials investigating novel treatments for patients with advanced ovarian and cervical cancers, and attendees will have the opportunity to examine and discuss clinically relevant case studies with a panel of experts.

This activity is intended for gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals interested in the treatment of patients with gynecologic malignancies.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to

1. Compare the risk and benefit profiles of current and emerging treatments for patients with platinum-resistant, recurrent, ovarian cancer.
2. Evaluate data from recent clinical trials on emerging strategies for the treatment of advanced and recurrent cervical cancer.
3. Evaluate the risks and benefits of vaccination for HPV and the available vaccination strategies for patients at risk for developing cervical cancer.

This symposium will use multiple methods of participation, including lectures, presentations, and panel discussions to engage attendees and enhance the learning process.

Physicians: The CBCE™ (The Center for Biomedical Continuing Education) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The CBCE designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.

Physician Assistants: AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for Category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 1.5 hours of Category 1 credit for completing this program.

The Evaluation and Request for Credit Form must be completed and returned to the CBCE following this activity to obtain credit. Participants will receive their certificate 4-6 weeks after the CBCE receives their form.
