Statement of Need
Prostate cancer will account for more than 27,300 deaths in the United States during 2009, making it the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Most cases of prostate cancer are identified while the disease is still in the localized stage and is potentially curable with local radiotherapy or surgery; however, 4% of cases are identified at the advanced stage, which remains incurable despite recent advances in first- and second-line therapies. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is typically used as an initial treatment for advanced prostate cancer. Although ADT can be very successful at slowing the progression of prostate cancer, in most patients, the cancer will become refractory to the hormone therapy within 3 years, necessitating the development of effective second-line treatments. Treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy, the current standard of care, can provide a modest survival advantage for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC).
Recent research advances and promising clinical outcomes support the application of immunotherapeutics as an additional treatment option for patients with CRPC. Several types of cancer immunotherapies have been developed for the treatment of prostate cancer, including dendritic cell–based, tumor cell–based, and viral vector–based vaccines. This program will update participants on the latest results from clinical trials that are investigating the safety and efficacy of novel, cancer vaccine immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.

This activity is intended for medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals interested in the treatment of patients with advanced prostate cancer.
