Statement of Need
T-cell lymphomas (TCLs) are a biologically diverse group of diseases. Most patients afflicted with TCLs are diagnosed primarily with a subtype of nodal, peripheral TCL (PTCL) or extranodal, cutaneous TCL. Although PTCLs represent approximately 12%-15% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas in Western populations, they are largely unexplored, and optimal treatment remains ill-defined due to the rarity and heterogeneity of the disease. Attempts to adapt treatment regimens commonly used for B-cell lymphomas have not shown a clinical benefit in most PTCL subtypes; 5-year survival rates remain at 15%-30%. Future clinical trials are needed that focus specifically on PTCL to advance our understanding of the disease and define optimal treatment modalities. Several new and promising therapeutic options have emerged within the past few years that are currently under investigation. At the conclusion of this activity, participants will know how to distinguish the various subtypes of PTCL, appreciate the barriers to definitive diagnosis, and evaluate current and novel treatment options for this disease.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for hematologists, oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals interested in the latest advances in the treatment of patients with PTCL.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to
  1. Discuss the incidence, classification, and difficulty in reaching a definitive diagnosis of PTCL subtypes.
  2. Evaluate current chemotherapy-based treatment options for patients with PTCL.
  3. Assess the safety and efficacy of novel, therapeutic agents currently under investigation  for the treatment of patients with PTCL.
